What does karate offer?

Not only is karate an excellent form of self-defence, it also offers the devotee an opportunity to adopt a healthy and balanced way of living - uniting body, mind and spirit. As a sport and martial art, it encourages self-discipline and is a pathway to developing the powers of concentration and awareness.

While karate training is very disciplined, the interactive nature of the sport offers a platform for participants to learn and practise life skills such as humility, mutual respect, sincerity and positive attitude. These, together with integrity - a code of behaviour that includes self-control - form the maxims on which karate is based.

Many parents encourage their children to participate in a sport that is both fun and exhilarating, because they recognise the sport's potential as character and confidence builder. Karate also helps mould the physique: it tones the body, builds muscle power, promotes flexibility, increases endurance and heightens the overall physical aptitude of the body.

Some people start karate training because they consider mastering the movements a creative challenge. They see the karate - and the training it demands - as a philosophy that adds both meaning and substance to their lives. Karate affords students the opportunity to reflect upon themselves, and their beliefs, attitudes and behaviour.

Karate caters for both sexes and all age groups and has become increasingly popular both as a recreational and competitive sport.
