News

28th July 2010 NEW - There are currently four student courses / events planned for 2011 where the content has yet to be decided. Please can all students think about what you would like to use this time for, be it a course, event, competition or even a guest instructor. The sooner the club knows what the students would like, the more time there will be for planning, and this should ensure a very worthwhile use of the time. Any students that would like to nominate themselves to take a course or organise an event should contact Sensei Damon with an outline plan and the suggested date as soon as possible.

28th July 2010 NEW - All of the planned events for 2011 have now been added to the calendar. Please add them to your diary. The Easter Monday Bank Holiday and the Early May Bank Holiday are in consecutive weeks in 2011, so if you only train on a Monday, two sessions will be missed. For this period, and for the first and last sessions of the year, I am prepared to accept students of any age at the Wednesday session in Worthing. There is also a course on April 17th which will count as two further session towards your grading session requirement.

22nd July 2010 If you have been selected to attend the grading assessment this Sunday, you should be aware that the registration time is 9.45am. The cost of the grading is £15 and you will need to bring your Grading Record Book (Licence), and all of the necessary items that you would bring to a normal training session.

22nd July 2010 If you have been provisionally selected to attend the grading assessment and you are unsure whether you should be attending, or have not completed the requirements set out in your grading selection letter, you need to contact Sensei Damon as soon as possible. Please do not put us in an embarrassing position by turning up expecting to grade when you have not completed the requirements expected of you.

19th July 2010 Additional photos have been added from the Black Belt grading assessment.

19th July 2010 New Members. White Tiger Martial Arts welcomes Karen Palzeaird, Samantha Palzeaird & Rebecca Palzeaird to the club. Karen, Sammy and Becky train at the Littlehampton session.

19th July 2010 I am pleased to announce that White Tiger Martial Arts now has two new 1st Dan Black Belts following a successful grading in Canterbury. Please see the pictures section of the website for a full report and more details. These are the first new Black Belts to be awarded since the club was formed in 2006, and Shaun and Graham are to be congratulated on their achievement, which is also a huge milestone for our club. Expect to see them training harder than ever now though, as once a Black Belt is awarded, the serious stuff begins!

17th July 2010 Well that seven weeks passed quickly, and tomorrow (Sunday 18th), is when Shaun Jurgelewicz and Graham Standing both attempt their 1st Dan Black belt grading assessment. The grading examiner will be Shihan Joe Ellis, 6th Dan, Chairman of NAKMAS, who are our governing body. I am sure you will join me in sending them both your best wishes. Results will be posted on the website as soon as possible, so make sure you check in regularly!

30th June 2010 The Leisure Centre has confirmed that our usual room is now available on Wednesday 7th July, so there is no need to move to the main hall at a slightly later time.

30th June 2010 Licence renewals for August - Daniel Jones (1st), Paden Vaughan (4th), Sue Allen (5th), Mica Allen (5th), Kira Allen (5th), Arthur Matthews (6th), Cornel Bolicenco (6th), Danielle Coskin (6th), Jake Wass (6th), Lee Wass (6th), Shaun Jurgelewicz (8th) & Stephen McDonald (18th). Please hand your licence and renewal fee (£15) to Sensei Damon at least two weeks before your renewal date to avoid any interruption in your training.

30th June 2010 Birthdays for July - Andy Moore (6th), Graham Standing (6th), Claire Ireland (11th), Cornel Bolicenco (20th), Sensei Sally (21st) & Daniela Becucci (30th). Happy Birthday from all instructors and students.

1st June 2010 I am pleased to announce that Shaun Jurgelewicz and Graham Standing have been provisionally selected to attend their 1st Dan Black belt grading assessment on Sunday 18th July. The grading examiner will be Shihan Joe Ellis, 6th Dan, Chairman of NAKMAS, who are our governing body. I am sure you will join me in congratulating them both on being selected, and offer your support and encouragement as they focus their minds and efforts over the next seven weeks.

1st June 2010 The astute amongst you should by now have noticed a new feature on the club website, Sensei's Blog. I am using this service to replace the articles section, as it is quicker and easier to update, and allows students and website visitors to comment on the posts. As always, any feedback that you have will be gratefully received.

1st June 2010 Licence renewals for July - Robyn Moore (7th), Phil Newton (9th), Ian Naylor (15th), Stuart Baskin (15th) & Claire Ireland (19th). Please hand your licence and renewal fee (£15) to Sensei Damon at least two weeks before your renewal date to avoid any interruption in your training.

1st June 2010 Birthdays for June - Arthur Matthews (12th). Happy Birthday from all instructors and students.

23rd May 2010 Well done to all students that attended today's course, I hope you enjoyed it. Most of the course content, especially kata bunkai and pressure point techniques, will not be taught in weekday sessions, as one hour does not allow us to go into enough detail. Therefore if you did not attend today's course, you have missed out on a rare opportunity to further your knowledge and experience, and two sessions that count towards your grading session requirement.

23rd May 2010 There are now only two months before the next grading assessment. Therefore if you are hoping to be selected, you should be at least half way towards your grading session requirement. Please do not leave it to the last minute before you realise that you will be short of sessions, as I will not be sympathetic or offer any flexibility when attendance has not been regular, and especially when valuable two session courses have been missed.

12th May 2010 There is a student course for all grades on Sunday 23rd May. This is a great chance to gain additional training and counts as two sessions towards your next grading requirement.

12th May 2010 The website has now been updated with the Spring grading assessment.

29th April 2010 Licence renewals for June - Craig Marsden (1st) & Stephane Canadas (1st). Please hand your licence and renewal fee (£15) to Sensei Damon at least two weeks before your renewal date to avoid any interruption in your training.

26th April 2010 New Member. White Tiger Martial Arts welcomes Luke Carroll to the club. Luke trains at the Littlehampton session.

25th April 2010 Well done to all Brown belt students that attended today's Kushanku kata course. This is a very difficult kata containing over 70 moves, and is needed for progression to 1st Kyu Brown belt. It is unlikely that this kata will be taught in normal sessions, so students needing this kata must make sure they look out for special events and make use of the dojo and instructors for free practice before and after a training session.

19th April 2010 New Members. White Tiger Martial Arts welcomes Mark Freeman, Tor Freeman & Paul Di Pietro to the club. Mark and Tor train at the Littlehampton session and Paul trains at the Worthing session.

2nd April 2010 Licence renewals for May - None.

2nd April 2010 Birthdays for April - Danielle Coskin (5th), Andy Dunham (15th) & Stuart Baskin (23rd). Happy Birthday from all instructors and students.

23rd March 2010 If you have been provisionally selected for Sunday's grading and are unsure whether you have met your individual requirements, please speak to Sensei Damon as soon as possible. Alternatively, if you have decided to remove yourself from the grading assessment as you feel you are not ready, you still need to let Sensei Damon know.

23rd March 2010 If you are due to attend the grading assessment on Sunday, don't forget to put your clocks forward an hour!

6th January 2010 Tonight's session has been cancelled due to the weather conditions. Unfortunately, travelling to get to a karate session can hardly be considered an essential journey!

4th January 2010 Licence renewals for February - Neil Ifield (1st), Ian Ifield (1st), Matthew Clewes (1st) & Matthew Angell (1st). Please hand your licence and renewal fee (£15) to Sensei Damon at least two weeks before your renewal date to avoid any interruption in your training.

14th December 2009 The last sessions for 2009 will take place this week. If we don't get to see you at one of them, then we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and look forward to seeing you back in the dojo from Monday 4th January onwards, preparing for the March grading, which will be here before you know it. Enjoy the break, indulge a little, and come back refreshed and raring to go. Best wishes from all of the instructors and assistant instructors.

11th October 2009 The grading selection letters have been completed and posted today, following the pre grading kata course. Each letter explains the grading selection decision together with the attendance levels and progress towards session requirements. Please speak to Sensei Damon if you have any questions about your selection decision.

11th October 2009 Well done to all students who attended the pre grading kata course today. You all trained very hard and there was a definite improvement in everyone's technique by the end of the session. Even though most of you only trained for an hour today, a Sunday course counts as two sessions towards your grading session requirement.

7th October 2009 We are pleased to announce that we have sourced a new equipment supplier, Black Eagle Martial Arts. You can check out their website from the links page. Sensei Damon has arranged a trade account, which means that we receive a discount on the published prices. If you would like to purchase any equipment outside of our normal club usage, please speak to Sensei Damon, who will be able to give you the trade price. As always, the club attempts to pass on as much of the trade discount to the students as possible, which results in lower priced equipment than most other clubs, and with some items actually costing the club more than the amount they are sold to students for.

7th October 2009 The message board has been updated with a few new items. Please check the message board regularly.

5th October 2009 The pre grading kata course for the November grading assessment is this Sunday 11th October. As this course is part of the grading selection process, if you are hoping to be selected and cannot make this course, you need to advise your instructor before Sunday. This can be by email, text, telephone or in person at your next session.

5th October 2009 Selection letters for the November grading will be posted to all students on Monday 12th October, following the pre grading kata course. This letter will detail attendance levels, progress towards the next grade session requirement, and the grading selection decision.

23rd September 2009 September's newsletter is now available, please make sure you collect one at your next session. The date for the kata course on the newsletter is wrong. The course is on Sunday 11th October, not Sunday 18th October as stated. Thanks to Craig for pointing this out.

2nd September 2009 The kata requirements for senior grades have changed with immediate effect. To achieve 1st Kyu Brown Belt, students will be expected to perform Kushanku kata to a high standard, together with the previous five katas. As 1st Dan Black Belt gradings are assessed by NAKMAS Senior Examiners, this change will ensure that any potential Dan grade student will have fully satisfied the kata requirements of White Tiger Martial Arts, before they are put forward for their black belt grading. As Kushanku is a difficult and demanding kata, all students will begin to learn it once they reach 3rd Kyu Brown Belt. Dedicated Kushanku training sessions will be announced in the very near future.

Paul trained for many years with Sensei Damon, Sensei Sally and Sensei Della before White Tiger Martial Arts was established, and all three were present at each of Paul's gradings, up to and including 1st Kyu Brown Belt. Paul was set a number of challenges to regain his Brown Belt, and he has achieved everything that was asked of him over the last twelve months. Those of you who have met and trained with Paul will have experienced his passion and dedication to his training, together with a charismatic and likeable personality, which make it impossible not to enjoy time in his company. I am sure you will all join me in congratulating Paul in regaining his Brown Belt.

15th June 2009 Two grading rehearsal sessions have been added to the website calendar. If you have been selected for grading, these sessions are a great chance to perfect your techniques and prepare you for the forthcoming assessment. If you have been provisionally selected for grading, then Sensei Damon will assess you in either or both of these two sessions on the points raised in your selection letter, and will confirm the final selection decision based on your rehearsal performance. Therefore, if you have been provisionally selected and would like to attend the grading assessment, it is imperative that you attend at least one of these sessions. If you already know that you cannot make either of the grading rehearsal sessions, please speak to Sensei Damon as soon as possible.

15th June 2009 All students should by now have received their grading selection letter. If not, please let Sensei Damon know as soon as possible. If you would like to discuss your grading situation, please speak to Sensei Damon at the end of your next session.

9th June 2009 The grading selection letters have now been written and will be posted tomorrow (Wednesday). If you have not attended on a regular basis, then do not expect to be selected, and if you did not attend the dedicated kata course, then expect to only be provisionally selected, as this course was part of the grading selection process.

8th June 2009 New Members. White Tiger Martial Arts welcomes Mike Angell and Ben Angell to the club. Mike and Ben train at the Littlehampton session and have been seen occasionally at Worthing.

8th June 2009 Grading selection letters will be posted to all students by second class post on Wednesday 10th June. This letter will detail attendance levels together with the grading selection decision. There are three options: Selected - which means that the student will be at the Grading Assessment assuming regular attendance is maintained, Provisionally Selected - which means that there are areas that the student needs to improve before the Grading Assessment, and Not Selected - which means that the student has not been successful this time. If Provisionally Selected or Not Selected, further details will be given to explain the decision. Students are reminded that they can request to withdraw from the grading Assessment if they feel they are not ready. Finally, selection to attend the Grading Assessment does not guarantee success, and all students should be prepared for the possibility that they may not be successful.

8th June 2009 The Wednesday session in Worthing has reverted to the original time of 7.30pm - 8.30pm. This session is for adults only (over 16) and for beginner to intermediate grades. 8th March 2009 This is the fourth Student of the Month award in a row to be given to a Worthing student. They are a great bunch, and the atmosphere between the students is excellent. However, I know some Littlehampton students who can achieve the award for March if they demonstrate the same level of commitment and dedication to their training. Come on Littlehampton, push those Worthing students hard this month.

8th March 2009 Student of the Month for February awarded to Ian Naylor. Ian trains at the Worthing session, but regularly joins the main club in Littlehampton for extra training. This, combined with Ian's persistence and determination, has meant a noticeable improvement in technique and ability. Well done. Ian will now receive a week of free sessions.

2nd March 2009 Grading selection letters will be distributed during the sessions this week. If you are unsure what is expected of you, or why you have not been selected to attend the grading assessment this time, please ask your instructor.

2nd March 2009 Student of the month for February to be announced this week. There was not a clear winner in January, hence no award was made.

22nd February 2009 Another great turn out for a Sunday morning self defence course.

9th February 2009 As it is half term there will be no training on Friday 20th February. All Friday students are invited to attend Monday's session on the 16th February, or the following Monday, the 23rd February. Normal Friday training resumes on Friday 27th February.

18th January 2009 By popular demand, the course scheduled for Sunday 22nd February will cover self defence, following on from the last course in October. As per the last course, please wear outside clothes (T-shirt, tracksuit etc) with trainers and your grade belt. Nobody turned up to the last course in their gi; don't let it be you that does this time!

18th January 2009 Well done to all students that attended today's Kata course. The joint themes of today's course were Moves and Tension, and please try to put what you have learnt into the next kata you perform. We hope that you enjoyed your morning.

17th January 2009 The long awaited Club Rules have now been posted on the website, and a hard copy will be handed to every student over the next couple of sessions. They are quite lengthy, but set out exactly how the Club is to be run, together with the expectations of all students. Please read through them and ask your instructor if you are unsure on any point. These rules, many of which should have been adhered to anyway, come into effect immediately.

14th January 2009 New Member. White Tiger Martial Arts welcomes Jordan Cathcart to the club. Jordan trains at the Worthing session.

7th January 2009 Student of the Month for November and December awarded to Arzu Kadoglou. Arzu has come on a long way in her training in the short time that she has been with us at the Worthing session, sometimes being the only lady in the session, and holding her own against the guys. Well deserved and well done. As per the new guidelines, Arzu is now entitled to a week of sessions free of charge.

4th January 2009 All of the course and grading dates have now been arranged for 2010. They will appear on the website in due course.

4th January 2009 The Wednesday session in Worthing is to remain a beginners session for students up to Yellow belt at the present time. The club founders are considering opening the session to higher grade students at some point in the future, but believe that the current club is growing well, and the existing Worthing students are benefiting from the more focused instruction that a smaller and less experienced class receives.

4th January 2009 The Student of the Month award for November and December will be presented this week. From this award onwards, the selected student will receive a free week of training. This entitles the student to attend any of their available sessions, whether they usually train at that session or not. For Orange belts and above, this means Monday and Friday, and for White and Yellow belts, this means Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the same week.

4th January 2009 A reminder to all students that the first Kata course of 2009 is scheduled to take place on Sunday 18th January between 10.00am and 12.00pm. This course is not compulsory, but if you expect to be selected for the Grading Assessment in March, then you are expected to attend the course to practice and perfect your Kata.

Well done.

All senior students are reminded that they are expected to train in as many sessions as possible, especially while they are working towards the higher grades and a possible selection for a Black Belt grading assessment. If poor attendance forces the Friday session to close then the progression of all senior students will be adversely affected. You have been warned!

11th April 2008 I have decided not to publish the club rules on the website. I feel that the majority of students are well aware of the basic rules of both the club and karate in general. It is the responsibility of the senior grade students to pass these on to newer members. The instructors will continue to point out any indiscretion in a private conversation with the student concerned. No matter what grade you are, if you see anyone acting in a way that you know to be wrong, it is your responsibility to inform them, or if you would prefer, one of the instructors.

Shaun demonstrates the way that any senior student aspiring to become a black belt should act and is a great example to others. Totally deserved, well done!
