White Tiger Martial Arts Club Rules

All existing and potential students, instructors and club officials are expected to read, understand and implement the following rules.

1. Club

1.1. The club name will be White Tiger Martial Arts, hereafter abbreviated to WTMA.

1.2. WTMA has been created to teach freestyle karate and self defence in the Littlehampton and Worthing area.

1.3. All Club Instructors are to be a minimum of 1st Dan Black Belt, over 18, First Aid qualified, and have undertaken CRB Enhanced Disclosure for working with children and vulnerable adults.

1.4. All Assistant Instructors are to be a minimum of 3rd Kyu Brown Belt, over 18, First Aid qualified, and have undertaken CRB Enhanced Disclosure for working with children and vulnerable adults.

1.5. An Assistant Instructor is permitted to take a training session in the absence of a Club Instructor, but only with the Chief Instructor’s authorisation. In this scenario, the Assistant Instructor becomes an acting 1st Dan Black Belt, and has the same authority as a Club Instructor.

2. Membership

2.1. Membership of WTMA is entirely at the discretion of the Chief Instructor. The Chief Instructor reserves the right to refuse membership, revoke an existing membership, or refuse to renew an existing membership, without giving a reason.

2.2. All new students must complete the WTMA Registration form and the NAKMAS Health Screening form before commencing training for the first time.

2.3. All new students must apply for membership of the club after four calendar weeks have passed since the first session they attended.

2.4. All existing students must check the expiry date of their membership in the back of their licence, and hand their licence and renewal fee to their instructor a minimum of two weeks before the expiry date. No student will be allowed to participate in a session with an expired membership.

2.5. Any student that has not advised their Club Instructor of a prolonged absence from training will be deemed to have resigned from the club once one month has passed since they last attended any session or event.

3. Etiquette

All WTMA students are expected to:

3.1. Rei when entering and leaving the dojo.

3.2. Rei when a Club Instructor enters the dojo.

3.3. Rei before speaking to a Club Instructor and before answering a question.

3.4. Address their Club Instructor as Sensei during a session, course, grading, competition, or other martial arts related event.

3.5. Listen carefully to all instructions and commands from their Club Instructor while silently remaining in Yoi position.

4. Presentation

All WTMA students are expected to:

4.1. Display a high level of personal hygiene during every session, course, grading, competition or other martial arts related event.

4.2. Wear a clean and ironed gi displaying the WTMA badge with their grade belt to every event unless advised otherwise.

4.3. Tie their grade belt correctly. If they do not know how to tie their grade belt correctly, they should ask a senior student to show them how.

4.4. Be properly dressed before entering the dojo and not undress or get changed before leaving the dojo.

4.5. Keep their fingernails and toenails clean and short.

4.6. Remove all jewellery including watches, necklaces, rings and earrings. If they cannot be removed, then they must be securely taped over.

5. Attendance

All WTMA students are expected to:

5.1. Train in at least one session a week and attend as many Sunday courses as possible.

5.2. Arrive at least 5 minutes before the start of a weekday session, and at the time stated for any other event such as a course or grading.

5.3. Advise their Club Instructor in advance if they cannot make their regular session or other event. Do not advise your instructor on the day of the session or event.

6. Grading

6.1. Grading assessments within White Tiger Martial Arts are scheduled to take place every four months. The grading months are March, July & November.

6.2. The Club Instructors will discuss the progress of all students and agree a list of  provisionally selected students. The Chief Instructor has the final decision as to which students are selected to attend the grading assessment, and complete discretion over which grade a student is selected to attempt.

6.3. If a student is unable to attend a grading assessment for which they have been selected, then they will have to wait until the next scheduled grading assessment.

6.4. The minimum age a student must be to attempt a 1st Dan Black Belt grading is 12.

All WTMA students are expected to:

6.5. Attend training sessions and courses on a regular basis to be eligible for selection.

6.6. Attend the kata course that is scheduled for the month before the grading.

6.7. Accept the final selection decision of the Chief Instructor.

If not selected for grading, all WTMA students are expected to:

6.8. Continue to attend training sessions and courses on a regular basis.

6.9. Offer support and encouragement to all of the students that have been selected.

6.10. Attend the grading assessment to assist the Grading Examiner where required (Brown belts).

7. Sparring

All WTMA students are expected to:

7.1. Wear their protective equipment at all times while sparring. If they have not purchased protective equipment or forget to bring it with them, then they will participate in non contact sparring only.

7.2. Demonstrate control and respect at all times. All contact must be minimal and under total control. Any student that shows a lack of respect for their own safety, or that of their partner’s, or is unable to control the power or direction of their techniques, will not be allowed to participate in controlled contact sparring.

8. Behaviour

All WTMA students are expected to:

8.1. Adhere to all of the club rules as detailed above. Any student found to be in breach of the rules risks having their licence revoked or not renewed.

8.2. Behave in an appropriate way at all times, both in and out of the dojo. This means acting with respect and discipline, and not acting in a way that could bring the club into disrepute.

8.3. Show the utmost respect to all Club Instructors, Assistant Instructors, Students and Guests. This includes training sessions, courses, gradings, competitions and any other martial arts related event.

8.4. Every Club Instructor has the right to ask a disrespectful, disruptive or unruly student to leave the dojo or training area for the duration of that session without a refund. This includes students who are likely to cause injury to themselves, other students, or damage to property.

8.5. Only the Chief Instructor has the authority to suspend or expel any student.

9. Finally

All WTMA students are reminded that:

9.1. They are not to use the skills that they are taught against any person, except for the defence of themselves, their family, or friends, in the instance of extreme danger or unprovoked attack, or in the support of law and order. Any student found to be bullying or harassing any student or member of the public faces immediate expulsion from the club.

9.2. The Club Instructors are not obliged to teach any student that does not show the expected level of respect, attitude or commitment.

9.3. These rules are subject to change at any time.
